What began as a small group of people building a tourism project has grown into something deeper — a circle of guardians, colleagues, and neighbours, all bound by their connection to the island and its future.
From the start, it was never just about Manta. The question was always why we are here: because Pemba is still intact — its culture strong, its reefs alive, its forests standing with hope worth protecting.
By 2007, this vision began taking root. Over the years, our work evolved alongside the island — projects emerged from the sea and soil:
the Kwanini Marine Protected Area, water access initiatives, and education partnerships.
Some grew fast, others slowly — each one teaching us how lasting progress takes time, trust, and collaboration.
The Kwanini Foundation, relaunched in 2018, now carries this mission forward — led by community voices, supported by dedicated local and international partners.
Together, we continue to nurture the balance between people and place, ensuring that Pemba’s natural and cultural heritage endures.
At Manta, hosting and guardianship are inseparable.
Guests are not outsiders but participants in an ongoing story — every stay contributes to protecting reefs and forests, empowering communities, and preserving the rare essence of this island.
We are not a family in name, but in practice — woven from daily presence, care for one another, and a shared belief that what is rare must endure.
